Forum: GratefulDead Subject: favorite versions of songs by year?

hi all,

i've been thinking about "favorites" of mine in the GD catalog, i.e. performances, songs, years. it occurred to me that while i sort of don't really have a favorite year, i do have favorite years for SPECIFIC songs overall. for example:

1. eyes of the world - 1973 (some 1974 versions too). the eyes from this year seem snappier than other years, and Garcia's guitar playing is almost always out of control good. most versions from 73 sound like a whip cracking.

2. me and my uncle - 1971, when embedded in an other one. the MAMUs from this year usually sound (to me) very dark, as opposed to rough-n-tumble cowboyish, and the song itself is very dark so i like it this way.

3. china cat/i know you rider - 1973. no real reason why, this year just has all my favorite versions.

4. the other one - 1972

... i could go on and on, but i'm interested in other people's.

???

October 21, 1971 at the Auditorium Theater, Chicago - Keith's second gig with the band. This is the version that comes right after that comment Jerry makes "if you want professionalism, you'll have to pay another buck ..." - but that's another story.

While I do like the slightly longer versions from 72 - 74, this version has always charmed me with it's 'roadhouse' sound and playing -probably due to the weird tone and slight distortion from the low end of the piano pick-up. Nothing really flashy here, Jerry's first solo ends with this little bit (think Commander Cody's 'Hot Rod Lincoln') and at 4:02 (3:30 on the other links listed @ IA) Keith does this short 3 second fill that is so country and so perfect for that place in this song that I almost always want to hear it played in that spot in other versions. It's those little bits - those diamonds in the rough - that bring me the big smiles.
